What is the best way to learn the times tables?

Understand first, then practise a little every day. See what multiplication means with pictures and dot arrays, practise one table at a time, then mix them. Five minutes a day works better than one long session.

Start with the 10, 2 and 5 times tables, which have the clearest patterns. Then the 4s and 8s (doubling), the 3s, 6s and 9s, and finish with the 7s, 11s and 12s.
